Today is my lovely niece Jessica's birthday. I cannot believe she is 19 years old already. She visited with us last weekend and was sweet enough to pose for a few pictures so I could practice my portrait shooting.
The shots turned out pretty decent with a little help from Photoshop. I am only recently starting to dabble with Photoshop actions, and found a boat load of free ones to try out at Photo Tuts +. It was there that I discovered a free photo coloring action from Deviant Art that helped me with the vintage vibe.
Remembering a treasured candid shot I took of my daughter-in-law on her wedding day, I told Jess to look down at her shoes which resulted in this natural look of serene reverie. This cool article I found at Digital Photography School has several tips for taking better portraits, including this technique of having your subject look off the frame.
