If it looks like a duck...

Old coot

Doesn't necessarily mean it is a duck. This shot was taken the same day I captured the eagles and hawk at Reelfoot Lake. I thought it was a duck until one of my photography group friends identified it as a Coot, which is evidently NOT a duck.

I'm not sure if this is a coot or a duck, but does it really matter? It's the tree that makes the shot.

I also do not know what this bird is, but maybe someone can identify it for me. This was also shot at Reelfoot.

I captured more than just birds on this day. There were also snakes!

And turtles...

That's it for now, as I must prepare for tomorrow's Floral Art Friday linky party. I'm actually opening it up for submissions on Thursday morning and I hope some of you are planning to join in!

  4. Hmm, I think it is a Coot, for sure a Common Grackle, which to me the word Common is used way too often in the nature world;) The snake is a friendly one with those round eyes. Now for the tree, I love them and that one sure is a beauty with character~

  5. Hi there - that’s a coot and my limited experience of such things says it’s a Grackle.

However, as you say we can get caught up in the names and miss the simple elegance of what we see.

  7. Beautiful photos Leanne! I love the action shot of the American Coot (a member of the Rail family) and the Common Grackle is gorgeous. The black and white shot of the tree is very cool and the reptiles are a bonus!
